ENCODING – The process of converting a video into a format that enables it to be put up on a web page is called encoding. The idea behind this article is to understand different video formats and encoders used for creating those encoding formats.

    Flash Video

Flash video is the most popular format used on web, now days. Flash video is represented by “.FLV” as the file extension. However, Files with “.FLV” extension are not mainly used by most of the cameras and video editing suites. While choosing an encoding software package you must compare its usability to the price you are paying for it. Adobe includes the Flash Video Encoder with CS3/CS4, which is free and does a great job, but has limited options and applications. Other commercial software encoders available in the market include Sorenson Squeeze, On2Flix Pro and Rhozet Carbon Coder. The main feature of these packages is greater flexibility and increased control of your media. These packages also support output in numerous other formats like AVI, MOV, and WMV etc. There are numerous soft wares available to encode video as well.

    H.264

H.264 is basically MPEG-4. It is a codec which is not considered a format, exactly. H.264 is a compression method which generates higher quality video at lower bit rates. So there would be many formats in H.264 encoding. H.264 encoding can be found in .MOV, F4V, and even MP4 files. However, H.264 requires more power for encoding and de-coding as compared to other formats, also, its compatibility might be lesser as compared to other formats. But still it is considered similar to HD video as you get better picture in a smaller file.

    Windows Media Video

Windows Media Video has been in use for a long time. The superiority race between WMV and Flash player has been a popular debate topic over the years. WMV gives excellent picture quality and is very stable. Moreover, in WMV, the VC-1 Codec, which is used in HD format, is supported by Microsoft, which ensures great picture quality. But, WMV is not compatible with different formats whereas Flash player is.

To counter these disadvantages of WMV, Microsoft has developed Silver light. Silver light is a platform independent product that allows you to create custom player applications like Flash player.

    Hardware Encoding

Hardware Encoding is a step ahead of software encoding. Hardware encoding devices ensure the best possible encoding with minimum possible hassles. These devices are must haves for live encoding.

    Live Encoding

For delivering, live video to a large number of viewers at the same time, CDN is the most preferred option. Most CDNs supporting live streaming can support hundreds and thousands of simultaneous viewers. The 2009 Inauguration of President Obama was watched by around 8-9 million viewers online, it was made possible by use of CDN.

For Flash Live Encoding Flash Live Encoder from Adobe has to be used on a high end computer. This product works fine for most consumer applications but it is seriously restricted by the horsepower of your computer. Since, there is no Mac version available for flash so it must be done on a Windows machine.
The better option for Flash Live Encoding is the On2Flix Live encoding software or the Sorenson Squeeze Live product. They offer higher quality video and more flexibility. However, for this type of encoding, the size of the computer really matters so; try to get maximum possible RAM and HDD.

A major concern among today’s online businesses is document storage solutions accompanied with stringent data protection. An enterprise that deals with a lot of paper trails often needs to address these issues.

There are many various ways that businesses can deal with this dilemma but only a few work for the long term. For instance, cloud storage solutions that are often offered free online may be cost effective but could prove to be risky. They can be hacked or left open for other unauthorized groups to pry on and distribute rapidly among the many available platforms and networks.

As an example, Dropbox, a Web-based file hosting service provider, accidentally turned off password authentication for its millions of users for four hours. This mishap allowed unauthorized and improper access to about 1 percent of accounts. While the figure seems low, it doesn’t sound insignificant if your account was one of those hacked.

The case for storage solution varies when you talk about hard copies that should be converted first to digital format before being dumped to a server. The problem of physically locating documentation when required is a huge task. In many cases, boxes that are stored with no cataloguing system for contents can be extremely challenging. Finding the right document or file can become a frustrating and time consuming task, as well as a waste of staff resources.

Seeking a company that offers more than hosting services is necessary today. A partner agency that can provide such services should be able to cover your needs end to end, from archiving solutions to digital conversion and from data protection to data destruction services.

Fortunately, there are many specialized service providers that can help enterprises with their data management needs. These agencies maintain fully fenced and secured storage facilities with limited access. The complexes are monitored 24/7 by independent security companies and are installed with CCTVs. Motion sensors, smoke detectors, and fire suppressant systems are also placed in key areas as additional precaution.

Visitors to such places are required to register upon entry and exit and wear high-visibility vests. They are provided with working spaces in case they need to conduct minor onsite work. Internet access, computers, printers, and other services are also set up. On the other hand, employees there also comply with security requirements including confidentiality deeds.

Such a storage complex can handle paper to electronic data. Proper handling and storage procedures are followed so these items can be kept secured indefinitely. For instance, items are placed on shelves to lessen the risk of water damage. Vermin control programs are also conducted.

Many data storage firms also offer other services such as data destruction, data backup and recovery, and information protection and preservation. These data experts use degaussing and shredding to destroy information-heavy hard drives marked for disposal. They also specialize in the latest imaging technology to scan hard copies that can be stored in disk drives.

SMEs and large corporations handling sensitive information should make it a point to have a partner that can provide document storage solutions that include archiving, scanning and imaging, remote location storage, and data destruction. Contact one now and improve your company’s data management processes.

Master data management (MDM) has emerged as an important aspect of all ERP implementation or consolidation exercises. With ever evolving and increasing inventory, supplier, product and customer databases, it has become essential to cleanse and maintain the quality of the master data.

All MDM initiatives have two parts – one, historical data cleansing and two, ongoing data management (Master Data Governance). Most of the companies think MDM as a cleansing and consolidating initiative but the bigger challenge lies in ensuring the quality of data on an ongoing basis.

In order to keep the cleansed data clean, it is imperative to adopt an effective and efficient ongoing data management (ODM) tool. Managing data on a continuous basis is fraught with challenges that are unique to this part of an MDM initiative. It has to address both the legacy data as well as new data issues in the same manner. It is a point of convergence for people, technology and process in order to manage the crucial data (information) of an enterprise.

This is a vital link in the overall ODM process for it maintains the quality of data and makes it available to a wide range of decision making hierarchy across an organization. In other words, Master Data Governance is the complete management of the availability, utilization and security of the data in a company. Master Data Governance also signals the symbiotic existence of IT and business so as to improve the overall process. It unifies the compartmentalized information across various departments in an organization to boost data sharing by all concerned. The information sharing results in advantages such as:

    1.Revenue growth

    2.Cost rationalization

    3.Inventory optimization

    4.Vendor rationalization

    5.Visibility enhancement

    6.Greater process compliance

The rising number of M&As and business expansions further strengthens the need for most of the companies to undertake an MDM project. These developments contribute to the data muddle in an enterprise. Some of the common hurdles faced by these organizations include:

    1.Plants in multiple locations

    2.Multiple legacy systems

    3.Multiple user groups across locations

    4.Multiple taxonomies across plants

5.Huge data size for material, vendor, product, etc

    6.Data in multiple languages

In a scenario like this MDM becomes essential to the success and survival of the business in the long-term.

Master Data Governanceis a decisive factor in an MDM project because of two reasons:

First, it monitors complete compliance – both internally and externally. From the internal perspective, DGM allows the requisitioners, local data managers and master data managers to view the entire data creation process and take suitable corrective action as and when necessary. This is besides overall monitoring of the material, product and vendor information in the master data. Second, an effective DGM can drastically reduce the threat to a consolidated master data repository. By bestowing data stewardship, it controls access to the critical master data. As result any change in existing data or creation of new data can be tracked and monitored at all times.

With rapidly growing businesses and M&As, global enterprises are finding it difficult to maintain the quality of their centralized data. While this holds true for companies across all sectors, it is a particularly hard for those from manufacturing, oil & gas, utilities and mining industries.

According to various estimates, demand for MDM solutions has increased in the range of 30-45 percent CAGR. This figure is even higher for companies in the manufacturing, oil & gas, utilities and mining sectors. These estimates also peg the market size for MDM to touch around $1.6 billion by 2012 growing at an average of 16 percent CAGR. The overall market includes PIM, PLM, CDI, Data Migration, besides core MDM initiatives.

Creating accurate master data and managing it consistently are challenges that no enterprise can afford to ignore. When your business runs on information, it needs a solid foundation of data it can rely on. That’s one of the reasons why companies have started investing on Master Data Governance heavily to safeguard their data integrity.Without that, the organization’s performance and success are at risk.

DataStore Objects (DSO) previously referred to Operational DataStores (ODS is the old acronym) are especially put to use in the BW environment to stage data and allow for an additional tier of data cleansing before data is moved to the InfoCube. Having said that, you could also use a DSO to report from (although not recommended as SIDs are assembled in real-time) overcoming the need to for an InfoCube. It’s a great practice to often involve DSOs in your source to target data flow. The three containers of data within your data flow should be DataSource (source of data) –> DSO (detail level data) –> InfoCube (data to be reported)

What makes a DSO distinctive from an InfoCube? DataStore Objects consist of much fewer tables as data is kept at the detail level. DSOs do not employ the ‘Extended Star Schema’ and therefore it is best to not report from this type of InfoProvider. DSOs are essentially a flat table (think of a spreadsheet) where data is dumped into. Every record is distinct in a DSO attributed to technical keys which I will talk about below.

When data is loaded into a DSO, it first gets sent to the New Data (40) table. The data will sit in the New Data table until it is activated, which then transports it over to the Active Data (00) table and the Change Log table (##…). During the activation, the New Data table gets purged, and a change record is loaded to the Change Log.

    Three Types of DSOs:
    Standard (most commonly used)
When to use- Line item detail level
Capable of using secondary indexes to improve read performance
Secondary indexes are set within the DSO modeling screen, lower right
Remember to delete data from change log regularly as it will continue to grow overtime and cause performance issues
Any data no longer being used in the active table should be archived

    Associated tables:

    New Data: /BIC/Adsoname40

    Active Data: /BIC/Adsoname00

    Change Log: /BIC/########## (dynamically generated)

    Write-Optimized (less common)
When to use- When data does not need to be updated, just written
Every record is ‘written’ not ‘updated’ so data loads quickly
    Uses a technical key
    [RequestID | DataPackage | DataRecordNumber]
Uses an optional semantic key that the user defines for ordering/grouping data logically
If you enable the ‘Do Not Check Uniqueness’ checkbox
    semantic keys will become disabled
    data will load faster
    reporting will be slower
Build indexes on what is accessed most often

    Associated tables:

    Active Data: /BIC/Adsoname00
    Direct-Update (least used)
When to use- When data is only needed in one version, active
Data is written using BAPIs and Function Modules

    Associated tables:

    Active Data: /BIC/Adsoname00

A boot loader program in the Windows system is used to start the computer by loading the main program in the operating system. There are several third-party applications like GRUB (GRand Unified Bootloader) as well that you can use to perform the same task with some advanced features. However, at times you may face some system startup issues because of incompatibility with these applications. In such cases, you should take appropriate steps to sort out the issue. If you are unable to do so, then you should use a third-party data recovery tools to do the needful.

Let us consider a situation in which you have a Windows XP system with which you have unsuccessfully tried to install Windows Vista to make it dual-boot. After doing this, you start Windows XP but it does not start displaying a black screen and a blinking underscore.
Please note that this issue may appear if you are using a third-party boot manager program.

Cause: The root cause for this problem is that the Windows Vista Setup program does not restore the third-party boot manage program.

Resolution: As a workaround for this problem, you should write a new boot sector to the system partition using the Recovery Console. To do this, you should use the following steps:
You should modify the booting preferences so that you can start the system using a Boot CD.
Insert the Windows XP CD and start the computer.
Press R to enter Recovery Console when the ‘Welcome to Setup’ screen appears.
Select the Windows XP installation that you want to repair.
    Type ‘fixboot’ and press Enter.
Type ‘Y’ and press Enter to confirm that you want to write a new boot sector to the active partition. After doing this, the following message appears on the screen:
The new bootsector was successfully written.
Type ‘exit’ and press Enter to exit the Recovery Console.
Restart the system and finish the Windows Vista upgrade operation.
Reinstall the third-party boot manager program.
If the issue is not resolved and you are unable to start the system, then you should use a third-party data recovery utility to recover the inaccessible data. Such highly interactive data recovery tools are read-only in nature that do not damage the existing data on the hard disk.

The best data recovery software that enables you to recover lost, deleted, or formatted data is Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery. With the ability to work for FAT, NTFS, and exFAT file systems, this RAID data recovery software supports several storage media such as hard drives, iPods, memory cards, etc. In addition, this file data recovery software is compatible with Windows 7, Vista, Server 2003, XP, 2000, and NT4(SP6) versions.
